Hoe voelt het om enerzijds van geen enkele cultuur echt deel uit te maken,
en anderzijds van meerdere culturen tegelijk? Hoe beweeg, spreek en zing je
in een vreemde taal die toch zo vertrouwd lijkt?
Samudra betekent 'oceaan' in het Indonesisch. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Indonesische onafhankelijkheid moesten de grootouders van Robin in 1949 de voormalige Nederlandse kolonie ontvluchten. Ze staken de oceaan over om een nieuw leven op te bouwen in Nederland, waar ze officieel staatsburger waren, maar waar ze nog nooit eerder waren geweest en nu ook niet bijzonder warm werden onthaald.
Bijna 70 jaar later volgt Robin het pad van zijn grootouders in de tegenovergestelde richting en steekt de oceaan terug over naar het huidige Indonesië; op zoek naar zijn wortels en zijn verloren familie. Met een oude foto en een half opgekrabbeld adres in zijn zak, begint hij aan een reis naar een land dat voorheen alleen in zijn verbeelding bestond: in de kleding, geuren en verhalen, zowel verteld als onverteld, van zijn grootouders.
Maker
Robin Block is een schrijver, muzikant en performer uit Amsterdam. Als songwriter bracht hij verschillende albums uit en speelde hij o.a. bij DWDD. Hij is tevens oprichter van de muziektheatergroep Project Wildeman. Samudra is zijn debuut als verhalenverteller. Aan de hand van persoonlijke verhalen raakt hij de gedeelde geschiedenis tussen Nederland en Indonesië aan, en probeert hij een brug
te slaan tussen beide culturen. In deze solo-voorstelling mixt hij storytelling met muziek, spoken word en de Indonesische krijgskunst pencak silat.

Samudra means ‘ocean’ in Indonesian. After the Second World War and the Indonesian Independence, Robin’s grandparents had to flee the former Dutch colony in 1949. They crossed an ocean to build up a new life in the Netherlands, a country whose citizens they were officially, but where they had never been before, and did not particularly receive a warm welcome.
Almost 70 years later, Robin follows his grandparent’s trail in the opposite direction and crosses the ocean back to present-day Indonesia; in search of his roots, and of lost family. With an old picture and half of an address scribbled on in his pocket, he starts a journey towards a country that had previously only existed in his imagination: in the clothes, smells and tales, both told and untold,
of his grandparents.
This personal story is about breaking a long history of silence, about honouring one’s ancestors, and trying to heal old wounds.
Along the way it also touches upon the shared history of the Netherlands and Indonesia, and the fate of those with mixed blood.
Artist
Robin Block is a writer, musician and theatre performer from Amsterdam. As a songwriter he has released several albums and played at many festivals, and TV and radio shows. He is also the founder of the ritualistic theatre group Project Wildeman. Samudra is his debut as a storyteller. By means of personal stories he touches upon the shared history of The Netherlands and Indonesia, and strives to build a bridge between both cultures. In this solo performance he combines storytelling with music, spoken word and the Indonesian martial arts pencak silat.
